I’m Noelle Kirkbride. Little Home Details is what happened when I set out to fix a whole house and got stuck in the hallway, turning a door handle over in my hand.

The plan was ordinary enough. Buy a tired place, work through it room by room, be finished in two years. What I did not plan for was how often I would stop. A brass pull that had been polished thin in one spot by forty years of the same thumb. A cup with a repaired handle that somebody thought was worth repairing. A hinge that squeaked in a particular way and told me which of us was home. The rooms are still not finished. The notes are what I have instead.

What this site is about

Small things. The hardware you touch a hundred times a day, the plates that never matched and got better for it, baskets and jars and the business of putting things down somewhere, mirrors and the marks they leave on a wall, books as objects rather than as a reading list, candles and what a room smells like before you interfere with it, and the ordinary tools that quietly outlast three kitchens.

It is a home site, in the sense that it is about the inside of a house. It is not a decorating site. Nothing here will tell you to paint an accent wall.

How I work

The rule: I live with a thing before I write about it, usually for a season, because most objects are charming in week one and honest by week ten.

The house is a small 1930s terrace with cold north light in the front rooms and a kitchen that gets everything in the afternoon. Old plaster, painted-over screws, a boiler that has opinions. Where something only works because of that house, I say so, because you may well have a flat with new windows and nothing to unscrew.

Why the failures stay in

I stripped a set of hinges with the wrong soak and lost the finish. I scented a room that did not need scenting and then spent a week airing it out. Those attempts are in the articles, not tidied out of them, because the useful information is usually sitting inside the mistake rather than next to it.

What this is not

No scores, no rankings, no ten best anything. No sponsored piece dressed up as an ordinary note. The photographs illustrate an idea; they are not documentation of my own rooms, and I would rather say that plainly than let you assume otherwise.
